If it's a power pulley get rid of it now! It slows down fan and lessens cooling! Has no place on daily driver! Scott

Before You can verify problem and begin to fix You must absolutely find tdc and mark on the crank pulley! If the marks on the pulley are wrong You can't time it properly! Since You need to adjust the valve anyways, now would be a good time to verify tdc with valve covers off, Also with sparkplug removed on #1 to fine tune locating exact tdc. I.E., rocking pulley back and forth and highest point of travel in #1 is tdc, then You can check and/or remark crankpulley @tdc. Then finish adjusting Your valves to proper clearances. Oh, Your engine should be solid lifters for '73. It would unusual for somebody to have installed anything w/hydraulic lifters. Start there and see what You get then check-in! Scott

I had same dileima, which to buy. As close to stock as possible I figured. I do know 009 had to go on My 34p3! Went with dvda from autozone of all places! They sell rebuilt dvda's for good price! Put on and hooked up vac lines. Night and day diff than the 009! You will have to readjust Your settings on carb for sure! And also driving habits! Don't have to mash gas pedal all the time to accelerate! I do think the vac retard made car run a little hotter so I diconnected retard function and re-time dizzy. That's a good thing about dvda, You can run it either way, just plug retard port in carb and use it as a svda! Either way, svda/dvda is the way to go with Your 34p3! Well worth the effort! Scott

Rotate 'til mark back to top, remember,You still have compression 'til@tdc. Both rockers should be slightly loose @tdc. Like .006! Believe Me, when I changed from 009 to dvda, I was surprised to find #1 position was 90 clockwise different! Then all I had to do was move each wire 1 position clockwise! Make sure this didn't happen to You and You turned dizzy so far to compensate that You have no adjustment for timing! Scott

Which carb is that? On My 34pic3 that rear vac line on carb You have running to airclearner is the retard vac port for dvda dizzy. Also, turn dizzy clockwise to advance. On my dvda the rotor points at 5:00 for #1 tdc. Scott

Not advisable! Hot air is funneled from engine to apron to pass underneath muffler and out the back! If You run without that tin the hot air re-enters engine compartment and is re-circulated at higher and higher temps! car will definately suffer with higher temps! Not good! I wouldn't drive it very far! Too much risk of overheating! Scott Here's a ad from the samba with a couple of diff breast-tins, one of them ought to work! http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/ … ?id=386991

You do know vw's don't warm up well at idle! Better off taking off right after starting! You are wasting fuel and not warming up to boot! Need a load on the engine for faster warm-up! Plus the wear and tear of idling a cold engine!  Scott

The screw You need to tighten is in the end of end cap. Not under, it's a tiny hole, might miss it but it's there and You adjust from there. Believe Me, You can get it plenty tight! Scott

In the end of the bumper strip that hooks into rectangular slot in bumper is a recessed screw. Hard to see and small but You just insert screwdriver and tighten screw in each end of bumper strip and this stretches the strip into place. That is all that holds it in place! Scott

Or D: Keep a log of fillups like I do for My '87 Jimmy. Never could chase down My sender or gauge gremlins> I know My basic mpg and capacity and keep a 50 mile cushion and re-fill within it! Believe Me, easier than dropping that tank! Scott, nc68bugman
