Bruce, Shut your fucking pie hole and do us all a favor and use the delete account button. The only mindless drivel is delivered by you. Worthless shit.

How ironic!  A terse, sarcastic attitude isn't welcome here, but obscene profanity is?

I'm sure he does. After re-reading this whole mess, it seems that his frustration stems from the fact that the original question seems to be looking for someone on here to wave a magic wand and diagnose a problem on a car that is umpteen miles away, without the OP really doing any diagnosis on their own. Sure, it COULD be a bad bearing, or it COULD be bad mounts, or it COULD be low on oil, or any number of other things. Without any more information than was given, any response is just a guess.  But, the man can defend himself. That's just how I read things.

Out of curiousity, Jack63+74, HAVE you checked the gear oil or mounts? How does the oil look and feel?

This is right on the money.

Too many guys just want their car fixed without having to do anything themselves.

I've got a local buddy who really knows VWs.  Been hardcore into them since the early 80s.  People go to him all the time for assistance with their problems.  He's always willing to help, but he tells them they have to do ONE thing right at the start.  They have to do everything he tells them to do in order to solve the problem.  Once they stop doing what he tells them, he doesn't answer the phone.

Jack, you've been told how to figure this out.  What have YOU done to solve this.

Bruce,  Good information....poor manners... and apparently, I'm not the only one who thinks so...

Three pages of mindless drivel and you still haven't bothered to put in the most meager effort of crawling under your own car to check your rubber mounts, or to check the gear oil.  Perhaps you're waiting for someone to come over to your house and do it for you?

I will check the tranny fluid in the am.

Still haven't checked the gear oil have you?

Sorry you didn't like my initial response.  Ask a stupid question, get a stupid answer.

Why don't you crawl under your car to see if your mounts are shot?  How the hell is anyone here gonna know that answer?

Changed the gear oil anytime this past decade?

About 4500 rpm.

71 and 72 IRS transaxles are 4:37 Ring and pinion and Dual side plate ! At 73 1/2 they went to Single side plate transaxle on T-1 <<< But not sure on all Buss tranny's but Generally speakin same deal almost !
The 73 1/2 Type 1 Single side plate are usually 3:83 Ring and Pinion But Super's actually came out with 4:11 and 4:12's .
Ok I could Write a Book on Gear's and Gear Ratio's etc And I know almost nothing !!

The only thing correct in this is the very last statement.

71 and 72s like all 67-72 USA delivered Beetles had a 4.12 R&P.  Bus transmissions got a completely different gearbox.
73 and later USA Beetles got a 3.875:1 R&P.  But if you think one of these gearboxes will make your engine run at a slower rpm on the freeway, it won't.  At the same time they changed the R&P, they also put in a shorter 4th gear.  The effective difference is ZERO.
73+ Supers with 1600s never came with a 4.12, only 3.88.

For the trike in question, a late 3.88 gearbox with a Bus .89 4th gear will slow down the engine rpms.

No need to change the other gears, the taller 3.88 will take care of that.
If you want to really make things tall, there does exist an aftermarket 3.44 R&P.  Do a search on theSamba classifieds, there's one for sale there.

Have you seen how fat that X wire from the ignition is?

The wire size is irrelevant when you're worried about electrical load while the alternator isn't charging.

Low beams are 55W.
Park lights are 5W each.
Licence light is 3W.
Side marker lights 3W
Total is 84W.  Or 7A.  Nothing to sneeze at.

Maybe you should also put a relay in it so the daytime headlights go out when you're idling the engine.  That way you don't run down the battery.

You should'a asked here first.  There's an easier way.

Take off door handle, read key code, get key cut from code.  'bout $20 and you're done.

I am going to add that #30 wire.

Where does that wire go?
