Re: How to remove the "Y" heater tubes from under the rear seat (18 replies, posted in Technical)
While you have those off, you may want to check out Darby's old post about putting some Atwood fans in that Y to boost the heat and defrost. (although you might not need much heat in Austin, cept when you come up to Colorado to go skiing)
We just got a couple of them and are now trying to hunt down the 3-speed switch - where'd you get that switch Darby?
Also, be careful with those bakelite pieces. Nobody makes those anymore. They can be put in without taking off the body, but I had to cut it up and glue it back together once we got the pieces back in place.

Topic: Door Handle Adjustment (3 replies, posted in Technical)
Is there a way to adjust the door handle (the trigger-like button) on a 72 beetle to make it easier to open the door? I have to pull that trigger way into the handle to get the latch to release and it's still a challenge to get the door open.
Thanks,
Dennis

Re: Replacing Alternator - can't get it out (13 replies, posted in Technical)
Vrroooooom! Alternator in, no smoking wires, car running, life is good.
Thanks to all for the insight and encouragement.
PS: I can see where this would have been a lot easier if we had pulled the engine first. Especially if the car is already painted and looking nice.
There were times when it felt like VW had started with an alternator and decided to build a car around it.

Update on the alternator removal: we got it out! Nothing to it after I took off the front bumper, disconnected the horn, and loosened the lug nuts on the right front wheel - just kidding.
Have to go buy a 36mm socket and we'll be off and running to put it all back together.
Thanks for all your help guys.

How do I get to that 36mm nut? from the back?
Good to know for the next time I have to do this. I've got most everything out of the way except for the thermostat. Pretty much have the engine pulled out thru the top anyway.
Thanks again

Topic: Replacing Alternator - can't get it out (13 replies, posted in Technical)
Hi guys,
I'm swapping out the alternator in my daughter's car that has a 74 SB engine. My challenge is that I can't seem to get the doghouse high enough to get the fan past the intake manifold. I'm able to lift it a couple of inches, but it's not enough. I think the thermostat is holding it down. I disconnected the thermostat support and that helped, but I'm not sure how to disconnect the thermostat itself. Can anyone help with how to disconnect the thermostat. I'm sure it's easy, but I stopped tonight as the frustration level got too high.
Thanks,

Re: I need info on installing my 67 bug rear deck lid. (4 replies, posted in Technical)
Wayne,
Here's a picture of one installed http://www.vwtrendsweb.com/project_cars/0412vwt_super/ Their line that "the spring needs to be relaxed when the deck lid is up" was an ahaaahhh moment when I had to reinstall one.

Re: Engine Swap - 74 SB into a 72 Beetle (5 replies, posted in Technical)
Thanks, not too worried about scratching anything and we learned alot about the deck lid spring when we put the SB back together the first time. That took forever to figure out!
How about any good ideas/tricks for getting any bug high enough to slide the engine out?
The last time we did it, we cribbed some 4"x4"s to get the jack and the jack stands up high enough. It was spooky having it that high off the ground, but it worked. (I probably won't have the Muir-recommended "4 really big, strong guys to lift the rear end" while I drag the engine out.)

Thanks guys. I think the rest is pretty straightforward.
Anything else I should be thinking about? Other than reminding my daughter about being more careful when making U-turns?

Hi guys,
We're getting ready to take the engine out of my daughter's wrecked 74 SB and put it into a 72 Beetle.
After doing a search of the old technical posts, it looks like I need to check/change the voltage regulator in the 72 to match the distributor from the 74. My question is, how do we check and match the distributor to the regulator?
Also, is there anything else I need to be aware of while making the change?
The old posts say there's a difference between pressure plate clearances for older bugs, but I'm hoping this won't be an issue from a 74 to the 72??
Thanks

Re: Front Bumper Shock Absorbers (6 replies, posted in Technical)
Thanks Steve, I might try to pull it back out somehow. I think these things are only meant to keep the damage limited in >5mph accidents, which is what she did. Anything more than that and there would have been some real damage. Also, after a cursory look online, it doesn't appear to be an easy or inexpensive part to replace.

Second snow - first accident
Well not really. My daughter slid on some ice in her '74 Super and hit a pole. No damage to the bumper, but the shock absorbers worked like they're supposed to and the right side of the bumper is pushed back 3-4 inches.
Can it be pulled back into position somehow? (emphasis on how?) I'm not sure if they were designed to rebound, but after 30 years, this one didn't.
Thanks for the help

Re: Auto vs Regular stick shift (60 replies, posted in Technical)
So just as I get my daughter's 74 Super on the road, somebody at work gives me a 68 with the auto shift. (how do you turn down a free bug?) Anyway, we got it running and drove it a couple of miles. It shifts into first a little clunky and when I shifted to second, the tranny would kick in at all. It's been sitting for a couple of years, so it could be anything.
Anybody have any ideas?
Thanks,
Dennis
