Hey Clancy, Here's a better view.

Volkswagen buses do well in accidents. Just look at how well this one did.

It definitely looks like the side (picture #3542) is hanging over the torsion bar cover. I think that the body shop should have done something it. That could definitely effect the alignment of the rear apron to the tail pipe.
Maybe other members of this site could shed some light on this area of the body. There could be some rubber pad (that goes between the body and the frame) that's missing. I never worked on that area of my Beetle so I'm not sure. It's hard to tell on my Beetle because of the amount of undercoat that covers this area.
Hey Mike, This site has many ideas on modification of Beetles. They also show pictures of finished projects. Here's the link: http://volksrods.com/forums/
Hey Dave, I thought that I might ad that CIP1 has a no refund policy on all carburetors sold. I purchase a Solex carb from them (that had problems with it). They would no take it back, give me an exchange or a refund. Maybe you will have better luck with a Pierburg. It's just something to think about.
Hey Jim, It looks like someone in the past used heat to straighten out some of the damage on the body. You can see on the side with the gap that there is no undercoating above the gap. Where on the other side there is. It looks like your Beetle got hit really hard. Hard enough that the body is lower on the damaged side than on the other.
Here's another try at image posting.

Hey Clancy, What does your Beetle look like?
This is my 70 Beetle with factory sunroof. The color is Savan Beige. The same color that came from the factory.
Bottom line - you get what you pay for.
Absolutely. I bought a set of hub caps at a swap meet. They were cheap and after that I found out why. In a matter of a few months they looked like they came off of the Titanic.
I guess that's the way the Germans put a governor on their engines. Simple but effective.
The choke valve is 1/8" open, at full throttle on a cold engine (that's not running).
Right now it's 80 degrees and the oil weight that I use all year long is 10w-30.
