Sorry that I disappeared after putting up information.  My daughter has been taking alot of my time.  I'm glad to hear that you got it sorted out.

Match the distributor to the carb.  You do not need a DVDA.  The retard was to cause the engine to run hotter at idle to help burn off hydrocarbons and help emissions.

If you only torqued the lower head nuts, you are asking for trouble.  The heads need to be torqued in a proper sequence.  The engine must be pulled to do this, as the top head nuts are under the upper cylinder tin.

VW designed the engine to have the top end rebuilt.  It talks about it in the Bentley.  Before you make a decision, check your oil pressure and end play.  If the pressure is low and/or the end play is noticeable, then it's not worth a top end rebuild.

Ya know, those wiley German engineers spent at least a few seconds deciding on the size of the pulleys.  A power pulley is good for drag racing.  It causes decreased power consumption for the short runs on the strip, but does not spin the fan fast enough to properly cool the engine for street use.  An over-sized pulley would cause the fan to spin faster at idle, but would cause the belt to slip at higher RPMs.  Part of the system is that it is very difficult to over rev the fan as the belt slips.  When the fan is spun too fast, it can and will detonate.

What carb do you have?

I'd not trust it.  If it were to break during an emergency manuever .....  There are beams listed in theSamba classifieds.  Get one from Ca.

The reason that chrome-mollies are set to a loose 0 is that they expand at the same rate as the cylinders.  The aluminum (stock) push rods expand faster and further than the steel cylinders, hence the ".006" clearance when cold.  The clearance or lash should get smaller when the engine is hot.  So, it should get quieter when hot than stone cold.

You still need to set the timing.

Did the timing slip?  The aftermarket distributor clamps do not hold well.

DP should have a 34PIC-3 (or 4).  A 30 series carb will need an adapter to mount to the DP intake manifold.  If you have a H30/31 (replacement carb) you probably have an 009 distributor (mechanical advance only).  It is not a good distributor for with the 34 series carb.  But you can get a new Bosch SVDA distributor for about $160.

Medic Ted- sounds like a good short term fix- I've bolted a door hinge to the pedal and floor on many a bus

Yeah, except that the bungee kept coming off the pedal.  It took $15 worth of parts and 20 minutes to repair correctly.
