SO...I ended up just adding the fluid to the reservoir--that is tightly packed behind the gas heater, but you knew that.   The pot was near empty.  I wish now I would have looked at it in the spring when I first got it on the road for the season, so I could at least have something to compare too--gonna have to be more diligent with my bug.  I need to do a better check for leaks also and need a bleed too (light still comes on when braking) but will have to wait till spring when I can get it done by a pro or I'll spend some time to research and do it myself-- never having been on the bleeding side of the pedal. big_smile

Just to update--I didn't get a chance to check the car out Saturday--my kids had a concert that lasted the day and I go to a hockey game today--Go Battalion!
I still have brakes tho--but better when pumper once or twice--brings the pedal up---it may have a small squirt somewhere.

On bleeding brakes--I used to help my Dad and uncles at the garage when I was a kid.   But once my other uncle asked me to pump the brakes on his Datsun and nothing was happening for him--we spent and hour then I realized I was pumping the clutch--what a moron!

Verbose with info or stories is always a good thing to me!!

Oh yeah--the synthetic thing--forgot about that--that was the first thing that sent red flags up to me at the Canadian Tire and wanted to ask specifically about--thanks for noticing that Burr!   And yes I will have to check for a leak--I ran my finger around the hole where the brake plunger comes into the cab yesterday and it was dry but will need to investigate further.
My first clue in that something may not be right was that the car didn't smell right--more greasy garage like.  Then a tiny little  twist in braking at stop sign.  Then the light came on at the same sign the next day, today.  So yes I should check this out before the car is parked for the winter.  Suppose to get some sun tomorrow.

Wow Nick!  That is informative!   Brake fluid is something I know nothing about and reading about the boiling point and braking is some interesting reading!!!!   Thanks for that!!!
I'll add the fluid in complete confidence now and will also need to read up more on DOT.
I'm sure the German mechanic who had the car before me bled the brakes at least a couple times.   The last couples years is the most I've driven the car on a daily basis so now I have to pay closer attention to the wearable components--this is only the second time for brakes issues.
Thanks man!

I need some confidence information before I pour this in my car.
My on dash brake light went on and off a couple times while I was out this morning so I stopped by Canadian Tire to get some fluid.  The young fellah didn't have any info on the books for my '69 beetle (1500) so he called VW and they recommended Prestone synthetic DOT 4 brake fluid.  Does this sound right???
I haven't had to put fluid in the reservoir myself in the 15 yrs I've driven it--had a mech guy for that in the past--so I just want to be sure  AND    I don't trust anyone  'specially VW on aircools (they've given me grief before) --the answer came back waayyy too fast, like it wasn't looked up and question if how old or experienced their guy was.
It was really cool to see the brake light come on--prob the first time in 42 yrs!!
Thanks for any help here!

That's good and conscientious work there James!

About the the weather proofing--does this mean, after applied--you can drive it all winter too??   The car is protected--with the salt and all??   Or is just precautionary for when it is stored ---not that you want to drive it in slippery winter conditions.

I should have added an "LOL".

Block heater.
