Topic: Tech Tip: Accessory position for key and a headlight buzzer

If you want to listen to your modern stereo with the key off there are only a few alternatives.

1) Switched power wire always on> drains battery even when off, worse if left on
2) Toggle switch for switched power> clumsy and ugly
3) Hidden switch> clumsy
4) Door switch and 4 relays> can't play stereo with door open and wiring is complex.(suitable for pre buzzer cars)
5) Buzzer wire and relay> Stereo stays on until you pull the key out of the ignition.

This is a plug in modification that is easily reversed. The headlight buzzer is an optional spin off mod using the same circuit.

My solution: No radio. At my age the engine sounds better than what's on the air.

Re: Tech Tip: Accessory position for key and a headlight buzzer

Thank You guys for all your input, I have found the original switch with 3 & 4 spades.  I will order 2 just in case this happens again.  Thanks to Rudi in Calif.      Cuse

Re: Tech Tip: Accessory position for key and a headlight buzzer

hey gang, I know this thread is pretty old (2010-08-26 20:14:02) but I'm working on a 72 bug and would rather replace the OEM driver's side door switch. GREAT SITE! BTW

I like the alternative solutions and would have no problem doing them myself. I'm a tech. Anyway, Cuse's Bug, if you're still around or if anyone else knows where can I order the OEM switches? I've seen a lot of different switches but not the OEMs.

I've been following the other related threads, too. I think I found you guys via thebugshop.org link.

I'm looking forward to hearing from you guys soon. Thanks, in advance.

Re: Tech Tip: Accessory position for key and a headlight buzzer

I believe you can only buy the passenger side switch which is single pole. The drivers side is double pole for the buzzer. Used ones aren't hard to come by. I have several. If you don't intend to use the buzzer you can substitute the passenger side switch. VW bus switches are the same and will fit. Probably other old VW's too.

Re: Tech Tip: Accessory position for key and a headlight buzzer

aye.... thx jamesdagg! I've been busy with the bug since my last post. I did find some 2 pole/ connector driver's side door switches. I have to use 1 of them. Would anyone be familiar with attaching the 4 wire door switch config to the 1 wire? I'm sure I can study the diagrams and notes that I've referenced earlier. Frankly, I'm just trying to save time on diagnostics and keep it moving.

Now I need the interior dome light assembly. I discovered that the brass contacts on the grounded side are missing (the ones that are "spring clip loaded"). I'm not sure if I can make or fabricate the contacts because I've never seen them before in the correct configuration.

Would any have a decent pic of the assembly without the plastic lens over it. I need to discern the contacts on both sides and I can probably make something work until I get a replacement.

I did find a 72 bug in a scrap yard the oter day but it had suffered an electrical fire. Unfortunately, I'm focusing on restoring the original electrical operatinos and correcting wiring, etc where needed.

And I believe that that windshield motor is shot. It just whirs lightly when switched on. The blades don't move or even vibrate. lol. I'll probably opt for a new motor since I don't think I'd get full value out of a used one.

Thx again for the replies and for a great support and reference data mine.

Re: Tech Tip: Accessory position for key and a headlight buzzer

It's not worth fixing a broken dome light. They're cheap,>

All you need on the drivers side switch is the brown ground wire and the brown/white wire to the dome light and passenger switch. The other two contacts are for the buzzer, brown/blue and gray.

If the wiper is making noise you should remove the entire assembly and freeup and lubricate the mechanism before you write off the motor.

Re: Tech Tip: Accessory position for key and a headlight buzzer

Ok, thx again for the info. I'll replace the dome light and work on the wiper motor. BTW my original job was just to diagnose, test, correct and repair the electrical system and wiring.

I only have an allotted time for this project so, it's time saving solutions I'm looking for. thx, again.

Re: Tech Tip: Accessory position for key and a headlight buzzer

Thx again, guys. I'm ordering the dome light assembly. There was a missing part in the original 1.

I've removed and disassembled the wiper motor and the metal shaft that sits in the plastic cam gear is loose. It should be firmly attached to the plastic cam gear so the whole thing turns when the motor is on. That's why I kept hearing the motor whirring. It was turning but NOT turning the metakl shaft that's linked to the wiper blade linkages. (BTW... I'm gonna try some JB weld or epoxy strong like that and see if I can repair the wiper motor, before I order that $100+ part. LOL

Now, if I could find the seat belt wiring schematic, I'm done with restoring & correcting the electrical problems. So, if anyone has a schematic or knows where I can find 1 for the seat belt wiring, I'd appreciate you posting or sending it.

Have a great 1, guys, I'll check back.

Re: Tech Tip: Accessory position for key and a headlight buzzer

The seatbelt wiring is in the '73 diagram because that's when it started. I don't believe your '72 would have it the warning system and interlock.

The relay is hard to get. This diagram from Speedy Jim's site may help.
