Topic: 1956 ghia wheels on 1968 ghia

Hi, I finAlly decided which wheels I want on my 1968 convertible ghia, the steel ones with the round chrome dish from 1956.  How can I get them to work on my car? My car has front disc brakes.  Also, where can I get them. I don't care if they are aftermarket, just as long as they look the same,  here is a link to a pic of the wheels:

that look is going to be very difficult to mimic on a 4-bolt pattern. there is a blank dome hubcap that fits the stock 4-bolt wheels and you could use trim rings. you could also use wheel adapters and bolt up the 5x205 wheels onto your 4x130 car, it might work. a nice set of the trim rings on those wheels in the photo are about as much as most people spend on a complete set of wheels. also, the hubcaps will not fit a 4x130 wheel so the only way to get a VW logo dome hubcap is to use 5x205 wheels. .

something like this set would work:

i don't know if the offset is going to be a problem with the wheel adapters, especially in the rear you may have issues because the adapters will push the wheel outwards.

in my opinion if you want that look there is no way to cheat it. if you have a '68 car it should like a '68. but that's me.

thanks!  I just asked someone else and they said that cip1 sells drums and discs that have the wide-5 stud pattern on them...  is this true?

yes they do as do lots of other vendors but you get what you pay for.Try CB Performance for better quality parts with e brake provisions for the rear. But you need to watch the rear as you don't have a lot of clearance in the fender wells.
Not to be rude or anything but you need a plan of attack for this project. Like what you want the finished car to be, disc or drum, IRS or swing axle, late or early looks.
Good luck and glad you are enthused about this project.
Edit and in VW land a convertible is a "vert" and the cloth sliding sunroof is a "ragtop"

Hi, thanks, I definately want those wheels...

I have decided to keep drums in the rear...

so if I get the wide 5 drums in the rear, and wide 5 discs in the front, then will I be ok for clearance?

thanks!

I think the 73 Type 181 ("Thing" in USA) rear drums will directly fit the 68 axles and are the wide-5 pattern.

Re: 1956 ghia wheels on 1968 ghia

If the thing drums do fit, are they not wider so clearance will be a problem? You don't have much fudge room on a Ghia. Ifn it was mine I'd just leave it as it came from the factory, the more you modify it, the more troubles you may have.  A Ghia is one of the worst for tire/ rims combo"s

ditto.

forget about changing the rear end, changing the wheels to wide 5, changing brakes to something non-original etc etc. keep the car the way it was built and you will have a smoother restoration process, and probably a better driving car at the end. modified cars also do not hold value well. the more you modify it the harder it will be to sell if you wanted to do so later, all the mods cost and none of that money comes back in the resale price. stock cars hold value and are always far far easier to sell. people say "i don't care, i'm never going to sell this car". change happens, life happens and some day you might decide to sell and it's much harder to find a buyer for your quasi-'56/quasi-'68 car than a completely stock '68. this also goes for colour choices, original colour scheme, including interior, for that car is always best in terms of resale. when you are putting massive money and massive time into the project, it's nice to know that you might be able to recoup some of it later, if you so desire.
