Topic: How do you remove wiper switch?

How do I remove the wiper switch and the headlight switch on the dash of my 1968 karmann ghia? I have all the wires ripped out and those switches are all that's left.

Thanks!

Re: How do you remove wiper switch?

Hiya Eric,

I'm not a KG owner, but I'm pretty sure those switches are identical to those you'll find in a same-year Bug.

That being the case............look at the dash side of the switch.  Remove the switch knob.  Just behind the knob you should see an escutcheon surrounding the switch shaft.  This escutcheon has two slots located on its face on either side of the shaft.  VW employed a special tool to engage these two slots and turn the escutcheon counter-clockwise to remove.  I've found that a pair of needle nose held with a steady hand can do the same thing IF the escutcheon is not in there too tightly.  The switch body then removes from behind the dash.

Re: How do you remove wiper switch?

I almost ended up practically destroying one of my escutcheons trying to get it off.  The way I did finally get it off is so simple, I am ashamed to say I didn't think of it sooner.  What you do is, you go to the switch in the back of the dash board and just rotate it counter-clockwise.  This loosens it up and once you've done that, its easy to unscrew the escutcheon the rest of the way from the front of the dashboard.  Of course, this assumes the switch isn't anchored in there with a key or something, but that wasn't true in my '64 bug anyway.
