Topic: 66 vw 1600 motor runs bad in cool weather-great in hot weather

my motor is real cold blooded  starts imedietly runs for few secounds then starts chugging down and i have to to tap the gas litley to keep it from dying, after about ten minits it warms up.  the MAIN problem is---------  if its cold, below 40 or so---it runs terrible and dies often when slowing down or stopping----when its 80 or above it runs great!  i have tried everything i can think of to fix the problem even rebuilt the carb, new coil ,new oo9 dist, points wires ,ect. make no diferrence.  had 2 mechanices look at it--no luck can any body PLEASE help me ?

'66 is 6volt unless it was changed maybe your electric choke isn't working if it is a12v choke coil
which carb?

'57 bug "BlackBerry"
'58 type261 single cab "Ruf"
'86 vanagon syncro "Syncro da Dr.Mayo"
and way too many project waiting

THANKS for the reply!  its converted to 12 volt,  checked out the electric choke works fine.
the carb is a 30/31 pic solex made in brazil single port.
i pulled the plugs they looked fine-3 months old, good burn----altho i did notice hard carbon build up on the electrode, picked off the carbon with a knife (very hard stuff!) and used wire brush to clean up rest of plug------made a BIG differrence------i geuss that was part of the problem----altho its warm now.  so far ----so good!  until it gets cold again

If your VW only has a problem running when it's cold...like Hank mentioned...check the operation of your carb's choke.  In other words...does it or does it not work, and if it works...is it opening too slow or too fast.

The choke needs to be adjusted as well. With the engine cold it should just barely be closed. The mark on the side of the choke is a guide but it's not always right.
