Topic: Torsion bar questions

OK, Im not a Bug owner, but I am a gearhead, so I need still some help on subjects I dont know about. My basic question is this, On the rear suspension of a Beetle, if the torsion bars are two differant bars that are slid into the tube, how do they lock in, and do they lock into each other. I could not find a diagram on this.

Re: Torsion bar questions

They're two separate bars and do not contact each other in any way.  They slide into the housings on either side of the car, and the ends of the bars are splined.  The splines mesh with the splines in the housing and the trailing arms to provide the grip.

Thank you for the info.

Re: Torsion bar questions

Hi guys, is there a simple way to lift a 62 bug

Re: Torsion bar questions

I assume you mean to raise the ride height. While you can do some adjustment with the torsion bars, on a 62 going too high angles the rear axle tubes down, increases the rear camber, and makes tuck-in or "jacking" of a rear wheel much more likely in cornering. I'd think a 68-79 "IRS" (or double-jointed as VW called them) rear suspension would be a better choice for this.
