Topic: Which is the better trans, Single or Dual sideplate?

My KG was converted from Autostick to manual by a previous owner. The current transmission is an AH series dual side plate, and the synchro rings are worn. I picked up a used single sideplate yesterday that the mechanic says is in good condition. The used trans is a single side plate, but is also an AH code with the same gear ratios (mechanic thought it would be taller).

Seeing that both have the same gear ratios, should I swap in the used single sideplate, or rebuild the dual sideplate? Which one is preferred?

OR

Should I just swap in whatever trans and wait for an AN or AR (preferred) series?

Thanks for the info. I can see where the case would be stronger without a huge hole on BOTH sides, lol. Are there any other benefits to an SSP trans other than case strength?

i believe all ssc have stronger gears also.

It is possible, depending on the year, that the DSC AH gearbox you have is identical internally to the guts of the SSC, but not likely.

A SSC will usually have a steel 1-2 fork, brazed 3rd and 4th gear synchro hubs, a stronger 9 tooth first gear, stronger 15 tooth diff side gears and 10 tooth spiders.

The DSC should have a much better reverse gear though.

Great info, thanks guys. I'll be using the SSP unless I find a good used Berg 5.  Lol
