Topic: Got These?

Hiya All,

So, I'm tracing down a small water leak on the passenger side. I thought it was likely to be the door seal, but no. The gas flap door pull is doing the leaking! I looked in the trunk and sure enough there is drip coming down the hood hinge arm and dropping right onto the flap door pull. Turns out that the leak originates at two (factory looking) small holes in the window channel at the bottom corner of the windshield on the passenger side. They're visible if I look up past the hood hinge arm.

I hadn't noticed those holes before and now I'm wondering, do you have a couple of small weep-type holes in the windshield channel at the bottom corner on the passenger side?

Yes

Re: Got These?

Mike: It's normal. My '65 has the holes in the lower corners as well. The holes let paint drain out from the corners after the body was dipped in the vat of primer/paint. My guess is that VW also wanted the frame to drain rather than rust out once the rubber weatherstrip began to lose its sealing properties (i.e., began to dry out, shrink and rot).

Re: Got These?

Hiya Clancy and Burr,

Yep, they did look like factory type holes.

I'm thinking there's a new windshield seal in my future!

Re: Got These?

Hiya David,

Thanks for the Info!

I oozed a little RTV under the seal (not that I'd recommend doing that in most cases) to see if I could plug those holes temporarily until I can get a new seal installed.  The car sits outside and our weather here in the PNW has been a mite damp lately and I'd like to keep a bit of that water offa the floor pan and outta the car.

Re: Got These?

My new seal from CIP1 had molded corners and was nice supple rubber and went in easy. Only thing was the lip outside is not as big and my car was repainted a different color so now there is a outline around the glass.

I used 1/8" aviation cable (like clothes line), KY jelly, and started from the top center.

Hardest part was putting the chrome in first. Right when I was almost done I got the hang of "rolling" it in with my fingers. Tape it, and the rubber once installed, in place on the glass with small strips of masking tape all around. Have a plastic putty knife type tool to flip out stubborn spots.

Make handles for each end of the cable because you can't hang onto your wire with your hands covered in KY Jelly!

Re: Got These?

I just put a windshield in a "car of a different color" and used black pinstripe tape to hide the yellow showing from the old seal.

Seriously though you would be in a real quandary if you were all set to put it in, friend standing by, and you go to pull the cable without a handle. There is no way!

Luckily I read on a forum to make wooden handles before you start. Worked great.

On a black car? Or did you use the black pinstripe as an outline to the window? Sort of like eye liner? I have a different shade of red outlining mine now and it looks bad. Come to think of it I need a paint job anyway!

Re: Got These?

Yupp my vent hole clearing tool is more like a cable than a scrawny wire ! LMAO
But Im with Jame's on this !! Usuall here is that Cal look window rubber doesnt cover these vent hole's in the corner ??
But as too wether these hole's should be sealed or not Im not Sure ? There are many drain hole's thru out the body, and pann of the V.W.
Most of wich I clear and ream rust out with a frayed end of a throttle cable that I, snipp / cut on an angle !( carefull Ive gotten my cable stuck in a few hole's took fire cracker's to get it out ?? ) Hee, Hee, Ha, Ha ??
But as to sealing these hole's I wouldnt ! Might be wrong here on this but it has alway's been my understanding that these were water drains to keep moisture out from under the window seal ?
Therefore preventing the cancerous condition's you will often find in windsheild portal's ??
Having driven from Haskell Texas , To Alburqerque N.M. In a 69 thru what amounted to 2 day's of solid rain ?? ( We stopeed off in Lubbock Tx over night ) But after 2 day's of solid rain and driving in solid non stop rain !
There was actual Mold growing on my paint legg from the amount of water that seep'ed in past the windsheild seal ? Course was kind rotton rubber ? But only take's pullin a winsheild out of a rotton hole to know that moisture gett's in under the windsheild seal !
Hmmm Kinda make's you wonder just how many of these car's are actually restored too Proffessional grade restoration ?
Good thing to seal with silicone is the top's of the door hinges when the plastic capp's are missin ??
I also pull all floor pann plug's !! Like right in front of the rear wheel's etc .
I runn water hoses in the heater channel's with the front of the car raised up as High as my largest floor jack will take it !
Other trick's Ive learned is 409 <, Cutt's a lott of rust and degreases surface's to be painted or sealed ! ( carefull it will discoulour paint and remove clear coat ! ) But will wash surface rust away even oxidized paint !
