Topic: An Oil Cooler Mounting Problem

Hiya All,

So, I'm still working on converting a newly built AutoStick Type 1 engine for use in my Bus. I have all the switchover stuff done but I've run into a problem with the oil cooler.

Doghouse set-up with the cast adaptor flange. New aluminum case. The protruding stud (top of case) to secure the oil cooler adaptor is too short. When the adaptor flange is mounted in place the stud only comes up even with the top of the adaptor casting.

So, I thought I'd remove the stud (used the double nut approach) and replace it with something longer. That little sucker does not want to budge at all. I'm thinking there could be some Locktite involved here. I don't really want to destroy the stud to get it out and I'm a little nervous about reefing on this thing since the threads in an aluminum case might gall. Any ideas, or do I worry too much?

Something else......this stud is for a 10 mm nut. On my other cases (VW) this stud works with a 13 mm. What's up with that? And, did VW ever use a Type 1 oil cooler adaptor that was engineered to work with the 10 mm set-up instead of 13 mm?

Re: An Oil Cooler Mounting Problem

Is it a dual relief case? 70 was the last year for the cooler inside the fan housing that used the 6mm stud(10mm head) Dog house coler71> used the 8mm stud(13mm head) I'd try and heat it up a tad with a propane torch,if it is lock tited this should loosen it up. Make sure you have the correct seals to match everything.

Hiya Burr,

I did get the stud out. Mr. Vice Grips to the rescue. Turns out that this was a step-down stud. 8mm to 6mm. I'll replace that and I'm off to the races.

This is a brand new dual relief aluminum case and apparently it was set up for a 70 or earlier replacement.  6mm stud and inserts in the outboard case mounting holes for the oil cooler.

Make sure the oil cooler holes in the case are 10mm or use the correct adapter seals (green)
