Topic: Mexican Volkswagen Engine

Hi there, was just wondering if anyone is familiar with the new
Mexican air cooled engines. I just ordered a stock factory 1600cc
from " THE REAL SOURCE"
catalog. Is anyone running one of these in their Volkwagen, and if
so
how is it holding out? I talked to an Import car mechanic who said
he would go with a new engine before getting a rebuild. I was
tempted to order the "STREETWAVE" engine out of this catalog which
claims to have about 1770 cc which I think is a rebuild. The price
for each was $1499.00 exept that the Streetwave had a core charge of
about $250.00.
I am not sure how reliable the 1770 cc engine is compared to the Mexi
-engine but I wasnt sure if the extra cc's was worth sacraficing
reliability. Any input is appreciated !

Thanks

Re: Mexican Volkswagen Engine

I can't help you with the Mexican motor, but I have been running a
1776cc motor for years, and it is every bit as reliable as a
stocker. I built it using a new factory case, Scat counterwieghted
crank, new matched rods, 90.5 Mahle pistons and cylinders(forged,
not cast) and a hydraulic cam and lifters. I run it with dual
Kadron 40mm carbs and a factory 034 dizzy with a petronics points
eliminator, and an alternator. It has never let me down, and does
not make any more heat than a stock motor. Much of the reliability
problems in larger motors can be traced to balance, ignition, or
mixture problems. Properly built and tuned, a larger motor will
last just as long or longer than a stock one. Hope this helps you
out some!!

very pleased with it. The motor runs strong,no leaks and you can't
beat new case and parts. One thing you'll need to do tap and stud
the case where the thermostat attaches to the case.Guess they don't
run flaps in Mexico. Also, the oil drain plate supplied doesn't have
the center plug so buy a new one with the magnet attached to the
center plug and the plate that comes with it is great,1/4" (1/2"?)
thick so it's durable. The Real Source ( they bought Rocky Mt. Motor
Works !)sells them. Good luck with everything!! BTW VW Trends has an
article in their last two issues on dressing up the new Meximotor.
Try to get your hands on it.

Re: Mexican Volkswagen Engine

The Mexican engines are a great choice for daily driver use. I have
over 30,000 on my car, my wife nearly 10,000 on hers; no leaks, no
problems, feel very strong for "stock." After all, this factory has
built more T1 engines than any aftermarket shop!
The parts (crank, flywheel) in these are designed to be limited to
5,000 rpm - the factory fuel injection won't let it over-rev. Used
within this limit they are as reliable as any.

Thanks for your input everyone! After shopping around the Real
Source seemed to have a fairly resonable price for the
Mexi-engine.
Some places were listing them for about 1700.00 which is a few
hundred dollars more than Real Source. There is a German mechanic
down the road who said he would install it and tune it up with dual
Kardrons for about $550.00. Might be worth a few hundred dollars
not have greasy hands and tools for a weekend not to mention busted
knuckles and trips to the liquor store to keep the assistant buddy
stoned during the transplant operation .

Thanks again and good luck with those Buggies!

Coming up to 35k miles in my '02 Mexican Sedan, which pulls strong
throughout the rev range, cruises for hours at 75mph and is more
fuel-efficient than any other aircooled VW I've owned. Seems to run
a little too cool, but better performance than expected.
