Topic: Axle Beam Question.

Hello, all, again!

It has been a while since I posted here, the '66 Bahama Blue Sunroof
Beetle project has been on hold for most of the winter. The '74
Rustolium Yellow former Sunbug is still sitting in the driveway
waiting for me to do something about the front axle beam. It is
pretty rusted out and missing the left shock tower mount.

I have obtained a used axle beam with 5 hole drums, same as my '66.
I would like to use it to replace the axle beam on my '74, but I am
aware of some differences in bearing size from one style to the
other. Any advice here, do I need to salvage the steering knuckles
from the '74 and place them on the 5 hole axle beam? Am I going to
be able to make this older axle beam work for my '74 by swapping
some parts? Thanks!

@@ LOL Fred, My old 74 was a mix of 66 & 74 front ends. The inner
spindle and the tie rod ends are different size. If the 66 tie rods
are good you can leave it all alone. You'll just need to swap the
74's brake backing plates and use new '66 inner wheel bearings.
