Topic: pulley notch and unknown distributor timing

Hi,

On my '67 Beetle engine I've got a shot vacuum diaphragm on my vacuum
advance distributor and the only option I have right now is to get
an old vacuum and centrifugal advance distributor - is there a way
to figure out the correct static timing for this distributor? I
could get it timed with a stroboscope at the mechanic's but if
possible I'd like to time it myself statically.

Also: on my crank pulley I've got two notches side by side - they're
so close together the wedge in-between the two notches forms a
point. So basically it looks like a W. Am I to take it that the
left one is TDC and the right one 7.5 degrees BTDC per the Muir
book?

Thanks in advance.

Raj,
The mark on the left is 7.5 degrees BTDC, the mark on the
right is 10 degrees BTDC. I would set your timing about 0 which is
about 3/4 of an inch to the left of the left side mark. UNLESS the
distributer you are going to use is out of a 74 bug and has only one
vacuum connection, then I would set the timing at 7.5 degrees
BTDC.
