Topic: Keep forum the same

Instant answers. that's why I come to this forum. If you break it
up into categories it is days sometimes before you get a response.
at least here you question is seen quickly and acted upon. I like
the other sights like SBO and Samba WHEN i have the TIME to go
through all the different areas. But most of us don't have that
much time. Here at this sight I can kick it up see what the last few
queries were and then go back to work. A moderator would be great
to keep the jerks off like all the stupid advertisements in the
general forum but I for one like this format. Thats just my opinion
but no one seems to have thought of why this sight is so good(
besides great advice) Denny

Re: Keep forum the same

Hiya Darren,

Basically my philosophy regarding the forum can be described as, "If
it ain't broke, don't fix it". However, I am all for preventative
maintenance.

Now I know that some areas of this site do need attention. The
search feature has had its share of problems and we are forever
being bombarded by idiot spammers. But does it really require a
wholesale change in format to remedy minor problems?

There's nothing wrong with the newer more generic VW related sites,
but differentiation is an important (even crucial) concept in
marketing. To make this site function (and look) like all the
others removes its uniqueness. Just another franchise, so to
speak.

I'd really urge you to give this viewpoint some consideration. There
is a lot of competition for VW related attention out there on the
net right now. What is it that really sets Volkswebbin' apart from
the other guys? What is it that makes people want to come here and
discuss their problems? Hint: It's not a glitzy format.

I agree with the points in this thread, but the bottom line is the
existing site *is* broke, and does need fixing. Plus it's just not
possible to continue to run the existing software on the new server.
The computer that this site is running on will be shutdown in a
week, and I need come up with an alternative solution.

Volkswebbin works because of the sense of community. Hopefully this
community will embrace the new version of the site. The new version
of the site will be PHPBB based, but I've done a lot of work to make
it as simple as possible.

I think you'll like it.

Darren.

I am comfortable on either type of forum, so the change doesn't
bother me all that much. I just want to say a big thank you to
Darren for putting in the work to keep this site going as long as it
has, and for wanting to update it and keep it alive as a source of
tech info. I have been around this community since it was the old VW
Archive, and it's been tremendously helpful. May it always be.
