Topic: Engine problems, Need Help!!!!

I just purchased a 1974 Beetle with a 1600cc single port engine. My
problem occurrs once the engine warms up. It idles and runs fine
first thing in the morning, but once I drive it down the road, and
the engine gets hot, it dies and will not start. Once it cools down,
it will start again and idle without any problems. I have replaced
the carburetor, coil, points, condensor, plugs, plug wires, and the
rotor. My mechanic told me that the engine was probably not grounded
to the chasis, so I tried that too, and it didn't fix the problem
either. If you have a solution to the problem, please email me.

Thanks,
Darrell

Re: Engine problems, Need Help!!!!

Darrell, I would concentrate on a clogged fuel line, or a clogged
fuel screen in the fuel tank, or a clogged up gas tank vent system.
It could also be the fuel pump. Loosen the gas cap and drive it down
the road, if it dies it is not the vent system. Have a can of
starting fluid with you and spray some down the carb, if it starts
and runs for a bit then dies I would think you have a fuel SUPPLY
problem. Post with your results.

Re: Engine problems, Need Help!!!!

Yancey,
I just spent the entire afternoon cleaning out the gas tank. I could
not believe the crap I got out of it. I also blew out the fuel line
with my air compressor. I have not taken it on a test run yet, but
will do so tomorrow morning, and will let you know how it does. When
I purchased the bug, it had been wired with an electronic fuel pump
which I replaced with a new mechanical fuel pump. This could be part
of my problem also. I'm thinking that the previous owner replaced
the mechanical fuel pump, due to a worn fuel pump push rod, and I
may have to put the electronic fuel pump back on to get it to run
right. The electronic fuel pump that I have pushes 2.5 to 4 PSI, do
you think this is enough?

Thanks for your assistance. Will email you tomorrow with results.

Re: Engine problems, Need Help!!!!

Darrell, The fuel pressure seems to be ok, on the subject of the
mechanical fuel pump, are you aware that there are two different
lengths of fuel pump rods, to fit different types of fuel pumps?
There is about 1/4 inch difference in length. The longer one was
used normally with the generator system and the shorter one was used
with the shorter style pump used on the alternator equipped
engines.

Re: Engine problems, Need Help!!!!

Yancey,
Thanks for your help. My bug is now up and running. I've been
driving it around all day. Its a blast to drive. I decided to leave
the mechanical fuel pump on, and its works fine. I was not aware
that there were two different lengths on the fuel pump rods. Now I
know why mine is shorter than what my book discribes. You are a
wealth of information. Thanks for sharing it. My next project will
be to replace my push rod sleeve seals. Any good tips?

Thanks Again,
Darrell
