Topic: Mexi-Beetle Drivability Problem

Hello all. I found this site while searching for info on my Mexican
Beetle. I am hoping someone can offer some suggestions.

My 2001 (on 1969 pan) Mexi-Beetle developed a bad surging problem
about eight months after I got it. My dad and I swapped all the
sensors and related parts one by one between his car and mine, but
could not locate the problem. At the time I decided to just convert
the car to a carburetor, and that's been fine for the last two and a
half years. Recently I decided to convert the car back to the
original fuel injection and try once again to find the problem.

Has anyone else experienced this surging problem? Does anyone have
any suggestions as to what I might try to locate the problem? I
have read that the VAG-COM software can read the Beetle's computer
with the proper adapter. Has anyone actually done this?

Thanks in advance for any advice/suggestions/information on this.

Re: Mexi-Beetle Drivability Problem

Mike,

I've emailed you some tech info that may help. I'm over by Austin and
would be glad to help you troubleshoot. We also have a 2001 on a 69
pan, and a 2000 on 73. They drive great, and by comparing sensor
readings we should find your problem quickly.

My Mexican Sedan had the same problem when I took delivery from the
UK importer. The problem was fixed under warranty, but I never
found out what caused it. I presumed it was due to an air leak -
let me know what you find.

You can have your ECM scanned using the VAG 1552 hand held fault code
reader at your local VW dealer. The fault code readers in the USA
do have the software to read the Mexican Beetles. My friend in
Mexico showed me his code reader that he bought in the USA and we
tested it on my 2001/74 Beetle. All you need is the right adaptor
cable. Unfortunately, the dealers in the USA do not have the proper
adaptor cables.
