Paint stripper usually only works one layer at a time, you will have to reapply to each successive layer of paint probably. In my experience the base VW primer has been gray/whiteish. Also, your car was apparently brown and dark green at some point Knock some spots down to bare metal with a DA or scotch disc or something and find out what you're really working with. I'd recommend that you remove ALL of the old, non stock paint, I've had some bad issues trying to paint over old thick nasty enamel, even when using a sealing primer. Stock VW primer and color coat are generally OK to leave on the car, if you don't have to remove them for bodywork.

Hi I just stripped the paint off of half of my car with paint stripper. The car is red and the paint stripper easily removed the red but beneath that was a thicker layer of brown paint. Any idea what the brown paint is? I ask because my car ( I think) has always been red

And ALS the front of my ghia is dark green in the front under the red, is this just ve's primer?

Am I doing the right thing by taking off all the pAint before re-painting?

Thanks!
