Air cleaner?

Could someone please explain to me the difference between an oil bath
air cleaner and the other kind ('73 and on). I read about this
stuff all the time, but I can't figure it all out. I also can't
figure out what kind I have on mine, I have a '69 bug with a 1600 cc
dual port. I bought the engine in great shape and I don't know much
about engines, so I haven't tried nor have I had to do any work on
my engine. Could it possibly be a new Brazilian engine (I can't
fine the code on the crankcase under the generator pulley stand)?
Also, could someone shed some light on installing a new outside
mirror? Is it possible to fit your hand in that slim little door?
I know I certainly can't do it. Thanks alot.

Instant answers. that's why I come to this forum. If you break it
up into categories it is days sometimes before you get a response.
at least here you question is seen quickly and acted upon. I like
the other sights like SBO and Samba WHEN i have the TIME to go
through all the different areas. But most of us don't have that
much time. Here at this sight I can kick it up see what the last few
queries were and then go back to work. A moderator would be great
to keep the jerks off like all the stupid advertisements in the
general forum but I for one like this format. Thats just my opinion
but no one seems to have thought of why this sight is so good(
besides great advice) Denny

Hi all,

I've threatened that it was going to happen sooner or later, but I'll
be switching off the old forum and moving to new software (PHPBB)
Real Soon Now.

The plan is to try to keep the old archives as well (along with a
much improved search interface).

My question to all of you: Would you rather see a full featured
bulletin board system, like the one on VWVortex?

Or something simple, along the lines of what's currently powering the
site, but with improvements such as better searching. As an
example, of simpler forum software, take a look at the Joel On
Software forum at http://discuss.fogcreek.com/joelonsoftware/.

Regardless of what forum software gets used, forum moderation (i.e.
deleting of bad posts) will be coming.

Let me know your thoughts,

Darren.

Engine problems, Need Help!!!!

I just purchased a 1974 Beetle with a 1600cc single port engine. My
problem occurrs once the engine warms up. It idles and runs fine
first thing in the morning, but once I drive it down the road, and
the engine gets hot, it dies and will not start. Once it cools down,
it will start again and idle without any problems. I have replaced
the carburetor, coil, points, condensor, plugs, plug wires, and the
rotor. My mechanic told me that the engine was probably not grounded
to the chasis, so I tried that too, and it didn't fix the problem
either. If you have a solution to the problem, please email me.

Thanks,
Darrell

cool accessory for pre-67 cars

Years ago there was a company in Germany called Jokon that made
various things for VWs. One of them was a neat back up light for pre
'68 cars that mounted by slipping under the rear license light
housing.
Dual lights for 64-67 and single lights for up to '63's.
I had some years ago but sold them off with the cars they were on.
I noticed a guy on The Samba that had some that he has reproduced,
look here:

http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/ … ts@aol.com

If that doesn't work, log into www.thesamba.com and click classified,
then type in Jokon in the search.

Anyway I ordered a combination rear fog light / back up light from
him for the '65 and it is awesome. I seldom go out of my way to talk
up something like this but his repro is actually nicer than the
original. These are available as backup lights only, combination (
for 64-67s) or only red lens as a 3rd brake light.
These would be ideal for 6v cars with weak brake lights and are 100%
duplicate of an original accessory too. They run $55.00 - $75.00
shipped.
I had a spare (real) Jokon kit I sold on e-bay last year for $125.00
so this is a good deal I think.

His name is Raul and his e-mail address is: Ultrarareparts@aol.com

Hi,

I'm having a hell of a time trying to find these. I was recently in
a wreck, someone rear ended my bug. Now that I'm getting it back,
I'm missing one of the tail light lenses.

Anyone know where I can get a european style tail light lens with the
VW/Audi logo molded into the plastic?
Mexi-Beetle Drivability Problem

Hello all. I found this site while searching for info on my Mexican
Beetle. I am hoping someone can offer some suggestions.

My 2001 (on 1969 pan) Mexi-Beetle developed a bad surging problem
about eight months after I got it. My dad and I swapped all the
sensors and related parts one by one between his car and mine, but
could not locate the problem. At the time I decided to just convert
the car to a carburetor, and that's been fine for the last two and a
half years. Recently I decided to convert the car back to the
original fuel injection and try once again to find the problem.

Has anyone else experienced this surging problem? Does anyone have
any suggestions as to what I might try to locate the problem? I
have read that the VAG-COM software can read the Beetle's computer
with the proper adapter. Has anyone actually done this?

Thanks in advance for any advice/suggestions/information on this.

Mike
Kerrville, TX
