How tough is it to replace wiper shafts,grommets,clips,washers,seals,shaft caps,bushings on a stock 65 beetle?

Somehow this part missed getting bagged and I don't recognize it. It has surface rust inside and out. One end is machined flat.

1974 bug auto stick

I bought a 1974 standard bug with an auto stick trans. The car has been setting for at least 9 years. I have replaced the plugs, condenser, points, rebuilt carb, new fuel pump and now the motor runs fine. My problem is the trans. I have replaced the 12mm hoses from the carb to control valve, control valve to can, from control valve to trans pancake and a small hose from control valve to carb. The car is up on jack stands off the ground. The car will go into gear sometimes and other times it won't. I get a grinding sound like the clutch not pushed in on a standard drive. I have adjusted the points on the shift rod, clicking when engaged in motor compartment sounds good. I did a test on the pancake, took the hose off at the pancake (car not running) place thumb over the nipple hole and could not pull the lever back, took thumb off hole and pulled back on the lever, placed fiinger over hole and it would not go forward, so i figure the pancake is ok. can anyone tell me what else i need to do. thanks

Having some issues with keeping my bug idling. Starts well but after about 10 seconds at idle everything quits. Timing adjusted right, new vacuum hoses (ones that I know of) new plugs, new condenser, clean air filter, new throttle cable. Just can't seem to keep an idle. Help is greatly appreciated. Had had a post, that if it starts, it isn't the computer/control box.

heat tubes to heater box?

The recent purchase of a '78 beetle has produced a problem. I found the heater box was not connecter to the heater hose (the one that transfers heat into the car). It seems the heater hose doesn't want to easily make the 45 degree bend it attach it to the heater box. A supplier told me he knows what I need, but they don't carry that part. Is anyone familiar with that little elbow piece that I think I need?

parts washer fluid ?

I just bought a 40 gal. parts washer that is designed for water based degreasers. Will a water based cleaner be good enough for engine cleaning? I'm wondering if I upgrade the pump and used a petroleum based cleaner would it be much better? Also I'm not sure if a deodorized solvent is safe in a not so air tight double garage?

New problem for me. I moved from the semi desert of the BC interior to the rainforest climate of Vancouver and my bus, which is waiting it's turn for restoration, is getting moldy inside. I'm not too worried about hard surfaces but the seats and soft inner ceiling of the pop top are getting green spots. Also I have other seats stored in it.

It doesn't leak anywhere but the condensation inside is bad. Can't leave a window open due to periodic downpours.

Any suggestions?

Anyone know if it stops growing if the temperature goes below freezing?

i have come to possess a 70 Baja, unfinished. The i see boxed swing arms that will accept a triple shock mount. there is no tranny in it. i don't have the brake calipers. is there some way to find out how to buy the right calipers? i looked over the rotors and there are no markings or identification that i can find. I'm also looking for a way to mount shocks. cut a hole in the wheel well and fab a bracket to the roll cage inside?i have so many questions. i also have three transmissions. how can i ID a bus tranny? one of them has many more ribs on the exterior of the case. i'm hoping for info on where to go find the info?

Engine compartment sound deadeners

While the engine of my 70 Ghia coupe was out for rebuild, I removed the original tarboard on the firewall and placed weights on it to flatten it out. It worked, and I re-installed the board when the engine went back in. However, it's rather dried out and stiff, and I don't think it does much in the way of quieting things down. I just got back from a two hour trip in the Ghia and my ears are tired!

So, I had two questions:

1. Who makes the best replacement OEM-type engine compartment sound deadeners?

2. Does anyone make the cloth bags that go in the corners of the fenders?

Testing heater boxes for leaks

I've been getting exhaust fumes in the car when the heat is turned on. It seemed to be coming from the left side only, so I disconnected the control flap on that side. Half heat is better than no heat or being poisoned! I ruled out engine compartment sucking in exhaust from the tailpipes by putting an air scoop on the decklid to provide positive pressure and it made no difference... the fume come in immediately as the heater flap opens. The right heater box is OG with the thick aluminum covering, but the leaking one is a replacement that has metal plates welded to the exhaust pipe.

I've ordered a stock replacement, gaskets, and dounuts, but is there a way to leak test heater boxes?

What kind of brake fluid--this ok?

I need some confidence information before I pour this in my car.
My on dash brake light went on and off a couple times while I was out this morning so I stopped by Canadian Tire to get some fluid. The young fellah didn't have any info on the books for my '69 beetle (1500) so he called VW and they recommended Prestone synthetic DOT 4 brake fluid. Does this sound right???
I haven't had to put fluid in the reservoir myself in the 15 yrs I've driven it--had a mech guy for that in the past--so I just want to be sure AND I don't trust anyone 'specially VW on aircools (they've given me grief before) --the answer came back waayyy too fast, like it wasn't looked up and question if how old or experienced their guy was.
It was really cool to see the brake light come on--prob the first time in 42 yrs!!

'71 Super restoration

Well I finally started restoring my bug. I bought it in Oct. 2006 with only 64,000 miles on it but sun damaged due to sitting 14 years in a semi desert. I have all the original paperwork and it was completely stock and unmolested. It had one owner, a women, who bought it new and only took it to the dealer for work. It still has the original Continental spare tire, never used.

She stopped driving it because she hit a deer and damaged the front left fender and door. After sitting for years she had the fender replaced, welded the lower door hinge, pounded out the door skin and gave it a crappy paint job. Also got a tune up.

I got it and changed fuel and vapor lines, cleaned up all the electrics, got new seats to replace the sun damaged ones and got the engine running really good. Had to do some repairs on the heat channel bottom plate and rocker panel mounting strip. So I drove it every day all year for 4 years trouble free except for small stuff. It was great in the winter because the stock heat worked well and it has a working gas heater and came with 4 studded snows.

I stopped driving it about two years ago. The muffler went, the rust that there was, was getting worse of course. I didn't have a garage though and didn't want to attempt this in my driveway. My shop in the basement wasn't that big either and was filled with Beetle and bus parts.

Now I've moved to a house, in Vancouver, that has a detached double garage lined with H/D shelving. I'm sharing the house with my friend and fellow ACVW fanatic. He has a '77 Westy and I have an identical '78 Westy.

I've already completely disassembled the Beetle, including the engine. Pretty much every thing that comes off is off except no need to separate the body as the heat channels are OK. There are rust holes at all 4 corners and behind the charcoal can is a large hole into the engine compartment. Floor pan is solid.

Now if you guys can just tell me how to put it all back together I'll be good to go!

what's with the leaking hole in my tranny.

I was cleaning my tranny from the '71 Super and when I rolled it over upside down it leaked oil in a small stream form a small drilled hole in the nose cone. Not mentioned in manuals and I've turned other VW tranny's upside down and this didn't happen. Whats up?

(Also leaks at both ends. Kind of like having the flu!)

Never noticed this before and it's not mentioned in the Haynes or Bentley.

'71 1600 dual port. Just above and to the right of the oil pump. Center of the pic. Plug is threaded in and has an Allen type socket hole. Wouldn't this be a good spot for an oil temp sender?
