I thought I'd worked out that the whistling was actually caused by
loose baffles in the tailpipes - which would mean its technically
not a whistle but more a high-pitched, annoying metallic rattle.

BTW, taxi drivers in India often hook up the reverse-light to an
electronic music box - all manner of tunes, ranging from Jingle
Bells through to the Star Spangled Banner, to warn you to get out of
the way!

At one time someone made a whistle that you could slide over the
tailpipe, or tailpipes, (if you wanted dual whistles.) I put a
couple on an engine that my mechanic had built just before he
started it for the first time, without him knowing it. When he
started it, they whistled like crazy and scared the shit out of him.
The next day I found my hat nailed to a block of wood with a nail
about five inches long.(Pay-back)!
I got him back a week later when I hooked up a device that played
"Love me tender" when he stepped on the brakes. He had a bus and I
hid it in one of the door panels. He couldn't find it for a long
time because as soon as he let his foot off the brake the song would
fade away. We pretended we couldn't hear it, which made him think he
was just hearing things. Well he finally figured it out and a couple
of days later I discovered that every time I stepped on the brake my
horn would honk. We called a truce after that. Who knows how far it
would have went if we hadn't.

Darby's right - the stock exhaust tips provide the "fweem" whistle
that identified Beetles coming a block away.

@@ Hey Clancey, I think your answer had some merrit and was not at
all off color. I had a technician hit himself in the head with a
hammer once and he acted wierd for several weeks until the
concussion got better. Maybe that's what happened ?

Anyone who want's a bug to whistle needs only to run a stock exhaust
with stock fiberglass baffeled pea shooter tailpipes on a 1600cc and
they will whistle all day long. They did when they were new !

Ho Im sorry, I dont think is some thing that should be Important , I
think it wolud be cool,, because Im on that stage that when yo have
all you dream to do whit your VW , Having that little detail wold be
some personal touch, and when I allways see a Volks whit that noise,
I think is nice, but some times I say, its to loud !...if I put that
noise on my VW I'll make shure to put it in a minor way...Some guy
at the red light on the street told me that his mecanic made that
job,and say in a joking way! Im tired of it, I'll change you volks
for mine...and then he told me that his mecanic told him that he
just bend the endings of the Fan Housing till they point the
direction of the fan, whit a hammer, like a V ...like this

Bob: This question was posed a year or so ago and received a variety
of responses, both serious and ridiculing. If you are intent on such
a diversion I'd suggest finding a small whistle you like the sound
of, drilling an appropriately sized hole in the outer edge of the
fan house, and epoxying the whistle in the hole. If you tire of
this novelty, be sure to carefully seal the hole.

Also, be sure to check with your local noise cops....sometimes they
take offense at obnoxious noises regardless of the decibel level.
Now, tell me exactly why you think this sounds so great? Remember,
your actions reflect on the entire VW community. Good luck and
please be considerate of those on whose ears you may be offending.
