The universal U-Haul types will
not work safely nor would a '66's beetle front bumper mounts
withstand that far of a tow. I used my tow bar again twice this
weekend after not having used it in over a year. It was one of the
best investments I ever made.

Chris: Is this an enclosed trailer? If so, the bug won't fit. If it
is a flatbed trailer, perhaps. The total length of your bug
(including bumpers) is approximately 13.5 feet. The wheel base is
about 94.5 inches (~7 feet, 10.5 inches). So you can see that the
bug "might" fit if you can hang both ends of it off the trailer bed.
A more important question may be related to the ability of the Grand
Am to safely tow the weight of the bug and the trailer (the bug
weighs in at around 1675 pounds). I'd be sure to check the tow car's
and trailer hitch's capabilities. By the way, I wouldn't be at all
concerned if you bought a tow bar for the bug and simply pulled it
with the Grand Am. That assumes that your bug has tires that hold
air, wheel bearings are in decent shape, the front beam is solid,
and the basic wheel alignment is within specs. I towed my '65 bug
for over 1200 miles behind a Ryder Truck with no problems. Good
luck.
